The Black Death Causes and Symptoms of the Plague

The Black Death, also known as The Plague, was a pandemic affecting most of Europe and large swaths of Asia from 1346 through 1353 that wiped out between 100 and 200 million people in just a few short years. Caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which is often carried by fleas found on rodents, the plague was a lethal disease that often carried with it symptoms like vomiting, pus-filled boils and tumors, and blackened, dead skin. The plague was first introduced in Europe by the sea in 1347 after a ship returned from a voyage across the Black Sea with its entire crew either dead, ill or overcome with fever and not able to eat food. Due to its high rate of transmission, either through direct contact with fleas carrying the bacterium or via airborne pathogens, the quality of life in Europe during the 14th century, and the dense population of urban areas, the Black Plague was able to quickly spread and decimated between 30 to 60 percent of the total population of Europe. The plague made several reemergences around the world throughout the 14th through 19th centuries, but innovations in modern medicine, combined with higher standards of hygiene and stronger methods of disease prevention and epidemic outbreak mitigations, have all but eliminated this medieval disease from the planet. The Four Main Types of Plague There were many manifestations of the Black Death in Eurasia during the 14th century, but four main symptomatic forms of the plague emerged at the forefront of historical records: the Bubonic Plague, the Pneumonic Plague, the Septicemic Plague, and the Enteric Plague. One of the symptoms most commonly associated with the disease, the large pus-filled swellings called buboes, give the first type of plague its name,  the   Bubonic  Plague, and was most often caused by flea bites filling with infected blood, which would then burst and further spread the disease to anyone who came in contact with the infected pus. Victims of the Pneumonic Plague, on the other hand, had no buboes but suffered severe chest pains, heavily sweated, and cough up infected blood, which could release airborne pathogens that would infect anyone nearby. Virtually no one survived the pneumonic form of the Black Death. The third manifestation of the Black Death was  Septicemic  Plague, which would occur when the contagion poisoned the victims bloodstream, almost instantly killing the victim before any notable symptoms had a chance to develop. Another form,  Enteric  Plague, attacked the victims digestive system, but it too killed the patient too swiftly for diagnosis of any kind, especially because Medieval Europeans had no way of knowing any of this as the causes of plague were not discovered until the late nineteenth century. Symptoms of Black Plague This contagious disease caused chills, aches, vomiting and even death amongst the healthiest people in a matter of a few days, and depends on which type of plague the victim contracted from the bacillus germ Yerina pestis, symptoms varied from pus-filled buboes to blood-filled coughing. For those who lived long enough to exhibit symptoms, most victims of the plague initially experienced headaches that quickly turned into chills, fevers, and eventually exhaustion, and many also experienced nausea, vomiting, back pain, and soreness in their arms and legs, as well as all-over fatigue and general lethargy. Often, swellings would appear which consisted of hard, painful, and burning lumps on the neck, under the arms, and on inner thighs. Soon, these swellings grew to the size of an orange and turned black, split open, and began to ooze pus and blood. Lumps and swellings would cause internal bleeding, which led to blood in the urine, blood in the stool, and blood puddling under the skin, which resulted in black boils and spots all over the body. Everything that came out of the body smelled revolting, and people would suffer great pain before death, which could come as quickly as a week after contracting the disease. The Transmission of Plague As mentioned above, the  plague is caused by the bacillus germ Yersinia pestis, which is often carried by the fleas that live on rodents like rats and squirrels and can be transmitted to humans in a number of different ways, each of which creates a different type of plague. The most common way the plague spread in 14th-century Europe was through flea bites because fleas were such a part of everyday life that nobody really noticed them until it was too late. These fleas, having ingested plague-infected blood from their hosts would often attempt to feed on other victims, invariably injecting some of the infected blood into its new host, resulting in the Bubonic Plague. Once humans contracted the disease, it further spread through airborne pathogens when victims would cough or breathe in close quarters of the healthy. Those who contracted the disease through these pathogens fell victim to the pneumonic plague, which caused their lungs to bleed and eventually resulted in a painful death. The plague was also occasionally transmitted by direct contact with a carrier through open sores or cuts, which transferred the disease directly into the bloodstream. This could result in any form of the plague except pneumonic, although it is likely that such incidents most often resulted in the septicemic variety. The septicemic and enteric forms of the plague killed the quickest of all and probably accounted for the stories of individuals going to bed apparently healthy and never waking up. Preventing the Spread: Surviving the Plague In Medieval times, people died so swiftly and in such high numbers that burial pits were dug, filled to overflowing, and abandoned; bodies, sometimes still living, were shut up in houses which were then burned to the ground, and corpses were left where they died in the streets, all of which only further spread the disease through airborne pathogens. In order to survive, Europeans, Russians, and Middle Easterners eventually had to quarantine themselves away from the sick, develop better hygiene habits, and even migrate to new locations to escape the ravages of the plague, which tapered off in the late 1350s largely because of these new methods for disease control. Many practices developed during this time to prevent further spread of the disease including tightly folding clean clothes and storing them in cedar chests far from animals and vermin, killing and burning the corpses of rats in the area, using mint or pennyroyal oils on the skin to discourage flea bites, and keeping fires burning in the home to ward off airborne bacillus.

After this experience Oliver had an epiphany realizing his bad doings and decided to change and care for his younger brother. In Act V scene iv lines 162-163 Jacques de Boys says â€Å"His crown bequeathing to his banished brother, And all lands restored to the magain † Jacques de Boys also states in Act V scene iv lines 160-161, â€Å"Where meeting with an old religious man, After some questions with him, was converted†¦Ã¢â‚¬  These two quotes show how Duke Fredrick transforms after entering the forest. His first major change is how he gave up his royalty and dukedom to become a monk. Before, entering the Forest of Arden Duke Frederick did anything for power including banishing his brother from the court. But after entering the forest is willing to give up everything he has to be a monk. The second significant alteration of Duke Fredrick’s personality is how he is now willing to give up all of his material goods that he prized. But after entering the Forest of Arden he has no wanting of his material goods that banished his brother and niece for. Duke Fredrick hows how being in the forest for a little while can change a character in the biggest of ways. In conclusion, in As You Like It by William Shakespeare, different characters change due to different experience and new people they meet during their stay in the Forest of Arden. Some people changed their view of people while others changed their view of the world. Form these examples it can be concluded that new people and new experiences can change people’s lives forever.

In fact, they must be vocal about this such as the social movements that this had inspired in India. Thus, the non-violent person inspired by Satyagarha will be useful in the Swaraj. He must be obedient to the rules in the community by practicing patience and self control. He must seek to improve himself through obedience. Yet, when there is something that needs to be publicly expressed as wrong, the attention of the civil government must be called so that proper action can be taken (Gandhi, 1961). For example, if a person sees that women’s’ rights is not being given properly, then this non-violent person must let his plight be known. Especially in India, this is a contemporary human rights issue. In a modern world where women are already treated as equal to men, the Indian society still think of women a subordinate. And this is the source of their various practices that are really oppressive to their women. Most Indians believe that women have no decision making capability nor do they have power over money and the household. Because they observe this within the society for so many years, very few have resisted. Women have been patient and enduring suffering through non-violence. But the true non-violent person according to Ghandi must make this problem known in order for it to be solved. He will fast about it or even hold a strike, but there must be no-violence or retribution is involved. The decision will still be in the hands of the civil government. But he himself will not be oppressive to women, as part of the virtue of non-violence. If we look at the same issue and see what a person with Kants enlightenment would do, I can say that he will be courageous and will step up to say what it wrong. Kant believes that people are not using their intellect and the capability to discern the violations of human rights because they lack courage (Kant, 1784). That is why this person will use his own decisions and intellect in order for the human rights violations against women to be corrected. Most likely, he will seek to tell women to have courage so they could use their own intellect in getting the rights that they deserve as human beings. â€Å"Woodchucks† by Maxine Kumin Analysis â€Å"Woodchucks† by Maxine Kumin Essay In this poem â€Å"Woodchucks†, Maxine Kumin sketches a canvas of a situation where a frustrated farmer is trying to get rid of the woodchucks. At the beginning of the poem, seems to be more of a Tom chasing Jerry type of story but as it progresses it turns into something more serious. Kumin in this poem introduces the speaker as a frustrated farmer who has already made the assumption that killing the woodchucks is the only solution to his/her problems. Kumin provides an alternative approach to view the woodchucks, which were once considered as the innocent creatures in the forest. Also in this poem Kumin uses some effective poetry writing skills like imagery, shifts and parallels, portrays the central claim effectively, where the speaker is a frustrated angry farmer who is trying to fix his yard by getting rid of the woodchucks. And he finds that killing is the only option to get rid of them, but he wishes they (woodchucks) have a quick death instead of a painful one. Kumin i s also successful in outlining how the speaker starts to drift away from humanity bit by bit as the hatred increases. The purpose of the poem is to illustrate how a person who is a pacifist gets consumed by her inner killer, passing on a message that everyone has an evil side. At the very end of this poem, Kumin concludes by creating a relation of the farmer and woodchuck to that of the Hitler and Jews in the gas chambers of the Holocaust in World War II. After reading the poem, it doesn’t feel like a song due to its rhyming scheme. This poem has a rhyming scheme but very subtle, it’s not the conventional rhyming scheme such as abab etc. In this case every stanza follows the rhyme scheme such as abcacb. It is very evident and the reader can notice this in the first read but this does not affect the effectiveness of the poem at all. The poem begins with explaining the unsuccessful attempts for removing the pests in the very first stanza, â€Å"the knockout bomb from the Feed and Grain Exchange was featured as merciful, quick at the bone† (Kumin 8). By this Kumin wants to explain the reader that the first attempt was a little merciful. Though it was still pointing towards murderous thoughts, but it was in a merciful way which would cause less pain, â€Å"quick at the bone†. And then the poet continues brushing the picture further by adding a little humor. â€Å"and the case we had against them was airtight, both exits shoehorned shut with puddingstone, but they had a sub-sub-basement out of range† (Kumin 8). Kumin is successful in adding humor by mentioning the chase between the speaker and the woodchucks and how the speaker is cunningly outwitted by the woodchuck only because of his/her overconfidence. From this first stanza, it is clear that the farmer has already decided and made attempts to kill the woodchucks, where he/she starts with a merciful way and transitions towards the brutal forms as the hatred increases. If we have to summarize the first stanza, a nice imaginative base picture is painted which depicts the funny chase between the speaker and the woodchucks. The next stanza continues extending and brushing the canvas by the verse, â€Å"Next morning they turned up again, no worse for the cyanide than we for our cigarettes and state-store Scotch, all of us up to scratch† (Kumin 8). By this time the readers start to sense the feeling of the hatred in the speakers mind and his/her mental situation related to woodchucks. Kumin makes use of some alliteration to highlight the words cyanide and cigarettes. â€Å"They brought down the marigolds as a matter of course and then took over the vegetable patch nipping the broccoli shoots, beheading the carrots† (Kumin 8). The later statements in this stanza exemplify the hatred growing inside the speaker due to the menace caused by the woodchucks in his/her yard. Speaker’s murderous thoughts are very evident especially when the carrots are referenced as being â€Å"beheaded†. The transition from this stanza to the third is comparatively smoother as the feeling of hatred has already evolved and this feeling is getting amplified in the third. In this third stanza the speaker has finally opened up and rolled up his/her sleeves with the immense hatred and vengeance, and this is unavoidable to be noticed by the reader. â€Å"The food from our mouths, I said, righteously thrilling to the feel of the .22, the bullets’ neat noses† (Kumin 8). The speaker, now mentioned as killer takes a moment to express his/her grief on his/her plan of action. The overall poem goes through two very important shifts, first where the speaker starts as sensitive and then turns into insensitive and then again back to sensitive. And the second, where the speaker starts the inflection in pronouns, impersonal and then turns personal when he/she starts referencing ‘I’ more as compared to ‘we’. This is very clearly evident starting from this third stanza. â€Å"I, a lapsed pacifist fallen from grace puffed with Darwinian pieties for killing, now drew a bead on the little woodchuck’s face. He died down in t he everbearing roses† (Kumin 8). This stanza can be recognized as another inflection point where the speaker is crossing the borders to enter an uncanny pleasure zone. It is also clear that the speaker has exposed him/herself and the inner side of the speaker is evident which was hidden all along. The speaker seems to be excited and thrilled with the killing. And this thrill again continues in the next stanza as the poem moves forward. In the fourth stanza, â€Å"Ten minutes later I dropped the mother. She flipflopped in the air and fell, her needle teeth still hooked in a leaf of early Swiss chard† (Kumin 8). Just a few minutes later, this was another brutal loss of life. The speakers thirst for blood seems to be increasing with the stanzas. â€Å"Another baby next. O one-two-three the murderer inside me rose up hard, the hawkeye killer came on stage forthwith† (Kumin 8). Now after reading this line it is very much crisp and clear that the speaker is a lot more angry and frustrated and is finding some forbidden pleasure with these vicious killings. The speaker seems to be sinking in the hatred and entering the world of vengeance and inhumanity. After reading the stanzas till this point it is also very clear that the speaker found some weird satisfaction from these killings. But the next forth coming stanzas mention the cost of this satisfaction in a more detailed manner. The final or the fifth stanza continues as follows. â€Å"There’s only one chuck left. Old wily fellow, he keeps me cocked and ready day after day after day. All night I hunt his humped-up form. I dream I sight along the barrel in my sleep† (Kumin 8). This total massacre planning and killing has drowned the speaker in thirst of blood, and this feeling stays with the killer no matter if he/she is sleeping, sitting, walking, running, conscious or unconscious. The last verse points out another weird psychological anomaly with the speaker. â€Å"If only they’d all consented to die unseen gassed underground the quit Nazi way.† This last line is a little awkward mixture of grief and murderous thoughts which are very rare. It more feels like for the speaker the killing of these woodchucks is more like a mundane task and there is no feeling of mercy. Also from this last line it is also clear that for the speaker the guilt has returned again now and he/she feels gu ilty again. But there is repetitive back and forth of the speaker’s feelings which are backed up by justifications and explanations which just proves the ironic effect of vengeance. And the entire justification and explanation boils down to woodchucks being at fault. It was a misfortune that occurred but it did bring a change in people’s thought process all over the world. Yet, Mathilde is self-centered and never realizes the problems her husband has to go through to ensure her happiness. Mr. Loisel expects his wife to be thrilled when he gives her invitation to the Ministry’s party. Instead, she throws the invitation in his face for not having a suitable dress and jewelry for the function. He buys her a dress with the money he has saved for a gun. Also after the party, he goes to look for the lost necklace at four in the morning and spends his ten years to pay the debt incurred by a lost necklace. He does everything possible to fulfill her demands and to make her happy. But she didn’t feel his love and devotion for her. Also, in the other way she is too proud because she doesn’t tell Madame Forestier about the lost necklace at first. Oedipus As A Tragic Hero - 1724 Words

In the story of Oedipus, Oedipus is considered a â€Å"Tragic Hero† because of the tragic fate and effect that he had upon his life. My definition of a tragedy is a great loss that has a unhappy ending to which concluded me to state that Oedipus falls under that category. Throughout the book, Oedipus is leading himself to his own destruction when trying to find the killer of the late King Laios. So when a journal article I found published by The John Hopkins University Press stated that a â€Å"tragic hero is a man who fails to attain happiness, and fails in such a way that his career excites, not blame, but fear and pity in the highest degree† ( Barstow, Marjorie.) there was no doubt in my mind that the story Oedipus fell under the category.
